Aimee Jones, Nanny extraordinaire

About Me:
Who I am and my philosophies regarding children and childcare

“Whoever wants to understand much must play much.” -- Gottfried Benn

Greetings Families! My name is Aimee Jones. I am a single, 31 year old college graduate with a Masters in Childhood and Special Education and ten years of nanny experience, including as a live in nanny for the past five years. The families I have worked for have been impressed with the high quality childcare I provide and I have unyielding confidence in myself as a nanny and homemaker.

I am seeking a position that allows me to use my work and education experience in a private setting as a nanny in the New York City area. I am happiest when working with children within a loving family that I am compatible with. It is worthy to note that I finished graduate school with a 3.7 GPA and an induction into the National Honor Society for Education. In addition, I have exceptional references from the families I have worked with. Being a nanny is in my heart.

“Play is our brain’s favorite way of learning.” -- Diane Ackerman

Relating to children better than anyone is instinctive to me. I have never forgotten what it is like to be a child and retain some of the best child-like playful qualities. I love to learn and view life with boundless curiosity. However, despite seeing through a child’s eyes, I am also quite worldly. I have a great deal of life experience, having lived in many cities including Orlando, FL, Rochester, NY and New York City. I have seen my share of the globe, traveling all over our country as well as to Shanghai, China, London, England, Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Montreal, Canada. I just returned from Alaska, and I hope to add many more places to my list, as traveling and experiencing other cultures is a passion of mine.

I am graced with a combination of a sense of wonderment, a healthy and consistent happiness, the ability to laugh at things and a taste for adventure. New experiences teach me about people and the world. This is what makes children enjoy being with me, what sets me apart from other nannies and why I would be a valuable asset to your family. I am intelligent, responsible, sensible, energetic and imaginative. In addition, I pride myself on offering patience, kindness, creativity, fun and a sense of playfulness to the children I care for. I bring a professional, competent and hard working ethic to the work I do, and most of all, trustworthiness. I was once described as someone you could leave in a roomful of diamonds for a day and never have to worry about missing one when I left.

“Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold.” -- Joseph Chilton Pearce.

I enjoy turning any city or countryside into a creative, educational and fun environment for children. I engage kids through the language that is natural to them, play, combined with the necessary structure that they innately need. Allowing a child’s imagination to flourish and grow is immensely important to their futures as great thinkers and innovators.

I am a wonderful combination of traditional and non-traditional. I was raised with the philosophy that family always comes first in life. I am also open-minded and an artist raised by creative parents. They were, and are, honest, decent, hard-working people who instilled good morals and values in me. Therefore I teach and model politeness, manners and have high expectations when it comes to children treating themselves and others with respect. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is the Golden Rule I was raised with and believe in. My parents used positive reinforcement and open dialogue as a form of discipline, and that is what I use. Through firsthand experience I have witnessed how these interventions are more effective than a punitive system.

I have written two children’s books that I am working on getting published; another dream of mine. I love to read to children and be read to by them. I am not a fan of television, unless it is something like PBS or the Discovery channel (or good movies), though I did grow up with Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry, so I hold a soft spot in my heart for old cartoons. I love to paint with watercolors, draw, and engage kids through the arts. Children enjoy the varied projects, creative ideas and experiments that I encourage.

“Almost all creativity involves purposeful play.” -- Abraham Maslow

I am neat and organized and believe that there is freedom in organization and discipline. An independent, self-motivated starter who can recognize need for improvement, I accept and appreciate constructive criticism, but not disrespect or demeaning behavior from anyone.

I find a sense of peace in meal planning, grocery shopping and cooking. I am a healthy eater, prefer eating organic when I can afford it, and crave vegetables more than I do sweets; though I would never say no to dark chocolate (it’s full of antioxidants!) I am a simple, healthy cook, a fan of light housekeeping, multi-tasking, laundry and errand running, and love and do well with animals of all kinds.

I am detail oriented, and believe in open, honest communication. I also recognize the need for private family time. I have a valid NYS driver’s license. I currently use the family’s car whom I nanny for to grocery shop, run errands and transport the children. I am certified in infant and child CPR, but I have only encountered two emergencies in my ten years of childcare, through which I remained calm and level headed. I am naturally a good swimmer.

I have cared for a range of children, from newborn twins, a family of seven, to children with emotional and learning disabilities. My families have been microbiologists, business owners, stay at home moms with working class husbands, a teacher and CEO of a not-for-profit organization. I have assisted in potty training, first steps, words, and foods, homework, reading difficulties, and peaceful conflict resolution between siblings and with friends.
I currently mentor for an 11 year old, inner city child with emotional disabilities who lives at poverty level. I am very close with her and her family and am proud of the relationship we have formed and of her major accomplishments and improvement since I began as her mentor. I have impeccable references. Examples of activities I engage in with kids: Learning about the world, our community, one another and ourselves through creative, educational play in a multitude of ways such as visiting museums of all kinds -- art, science, history, children’s, etc., making craft/art projects pertaining to outings together to reinforce what the children have observed and learned. We paint, draw, do arts and crafts, play games, make up our own games, see plays -- I haven’t written a play with kids yet, but it’s in my future plans. We try new things and foods that broaden our perspectives. We use our imaginations, build villages (life size or models) from cardboard boxes, write poems, write stories, experiment, cook, bake, learn entrepreneurial skills by advertising for and holding sales with lemonade, baked goods and crafts we’ve made. We visit friends and family, swim, hike, bike, run, climb, picnic, explore, go on nature walks, listen to music, dance, read quietly, read to each other, read to the cats and to stuffed animals. NYC has so much to offer that I am exhilarated by the idea of everything I can do and plan for you and your family.

What I am looking for in a family and nanny position:
I am looking for a full-time, live-in position with weekends off (some exceptions are understandable) with a family whose philosophies about childcare and family that are aligned with mine. When it comes to making decisions with your home and children, it is important that we are like-minded and compatible for the sake of running a smooth, well-organized, healthy environment. The salary needs to be highly competitive with health benefits.
